My kids applications are basically done and he (and I) would love to pull the trigger. He is taking the SAT next week and again in September just in case. The schools he is applying for are all TO and competitive but not hyper competitive (I.e. reach schools are Clemson and tech for engineering).
So, in the nature of there is no dumb question, here’s my dumb question-if he check “yes” in the main common app that tests can get sent but then answers no to some and yes to some on the individual school applications, does the common app trump and they get sent the scores regardless of what we say in the individual school applications. |
| Just wait for the test results. |
|
You edit the Common App in between application submissions. The college receives whatever's in Common App at the time of submission. For a school where they are applying test optional, remove the score from Common App before submitting the application. Then, if they later apply to a school where they want to report their score, simply enter it into the app.
Keep in mind that not all colleges allow you to change your mind on whether you are applying with or without a test score. Please wait until after scores are released to decide whether and where to submit scores and accordingly, wait on submitting the application. Very important, not all colleges accept scores reported in the app even if you enter them there. Such colleges will only consider scores sent via official score report from College Board at the time of application. THIS INCLUDES CLEMSON. |
To clarify this last point, I mean the official score report must be received by the college's deadline. Sometimes colleges have a different deadline for other materials, such as the score report, that differs from the application deadline. It might be called a materials deadline or similar. See, e.g. the deadlines here https://www.clemson.edu/admissions/undergraduate-admissions/apply/first-year.html |

A note about Virginia Tech:
"If you want your SAT/ACT scores to be reviewed, you must report them on your STARS Record." https://www.vt.edu/admissions/undergraduate/apply/freshman-checklist.html |
| Just wait. You’ll know September scores by end of September and can submit everything you want cleanly by October 1. There’s no reason or advantage to doing it earlier so why not go back to school and just sit on the applications. |
