Do you think intervention by school counselors is more, less or the same as when we were young?

I grew up in a place that was so poor that the school did not have a counselor that worked with the students. I'm wondering about all the guidance classes, zero-tolerance policies and character classwork that schools do these days. For those of you who went to a school that had a counselor, was this the norm when you were little? Or is there a different view these days of this position and of what their role in the school is?

Much less sexism in the guidance departments than when I was a kid. Probably less overt racism.

They still have their limits...

When I was younger, guidance counselors were useless. Useless. Now, I am so thankful for the guidance counselor at my child's school. She is wonderful. She proactively works with all the kids and is super responsive to any problems.

I like that they are proactive too. They often stop problems before they start and they are a great resource for teachers and parents. I don't remember my school's guidance counselor at all. Maybe we didn't have one.
