Im a bit out of touch with recent headlines this week. But seems many people on the internet are trying to stand up against YouTube on this “ID verification” and “AI age estimator” thing. Any idea what even is going on?

| That’s a lot of chemistry for something my grandma used to fix with lemon juice, baking soda, and staying out of the noon sun. At this point your face probably qualifies as a controlled lab environment. Careful you don’t accidentally discover a new element before the melasma comes back anyway. |
| I just read about a guy who uploaded a gaming clip to YouTube and got flagged for “age verification” because the AI thought he looked twelve. He’s 43, has a mortgage, and a full beard. Another woman said the system guessed she was 17, locked her out of her channel, and made her upload her passport — which she did — only for the AI to then decide she was 9. People are freaking out because once your ID and face scan are in Google’s hands, there’s no “delete” button… just the hope that it doesn’t end up training a robot to sell you laxatives in 40 years. |

Sigh. It's so hard to respond to these thread with equanimity.
Do you understand, OP, that ideas floating online are usually not what a plurality of people thing about? The loudest voices hold sway on the internet, but it doesn't mean that you need to go along with them, or let yourself be persuaded. It doesn't mean that the majority of people in any given country have even heard of the same things you've heard, since everyone is in their own online bubble and is seeing different content. Sure, content overlaps, but not that much. Everyone has their own interests and groups. I agree that age verification by AI still has a long way to go and that occasionally, users can change company policy if enough of them push for it. But right now, no, there is no widely-followed boycott of YouTube. There might be if enough of us push for it, though! |

YouTube is at war with ad blocker extensions on browsers. At the moment, it is easy (but getting harder) to block ads by using Linux (I use Gentoo) and Ad Block Plus in Firefox web browser.
YouTube is using “protect the poor, widdle children” as an excuse to be able to identify people and bombard them with ads, which will increase revenue for YouTube. Ad Blockers are interfering with their revenue, so YouTube is taking steps to stop it. When I can no longer watch YouTube without ads slammed in my face constantly is when I will stop watching YouTube completely. Ads are one reason I dropped cable TV. You do not get to charge me a fee to watch programs then interrupt my viewing repeatedly with ads. |

Very surprised with these out of context answers.
Apparently, YouTube is implementing AI age estimation based on your watch and search histories and how it will estimate your age. A lot of people are already getting negative expectations saying as if “It was never about the kids!” Ffs, the government should NOT be involved in this whenever KOSA act gets implemented. |
Government (aka Corporations) are trying to get people to show ID and use facial recognition software to get everyone to be monitored 100% of the time they are online. They want to know everything. They want to control everything you do and read. They want complete obedience. They want it like North Korea, China, Russia, etc. |
Same. I haven't watched any program that airs on commercial TV in over 15 years. The commercials were getting weak and silly in the late 2000s, cannot imagine how bad they must be by now. |
