I have an 18 month old who often points at objects of interest (airplanes, cars, lights, fans). He will very often verbally label what he’s looking at when he points, but he basically never turns back to see my face when pointing. (He does sometimes study my face when seated with an object of interest though.) How weird is this? I ask because I’ve heard the classic “triadic” point is the most reassuring form of showing joint attention.
For reference, his older brother has autism, so that’s my primary concern, but big bro basically never pointed at all, so I don’t have a great frame of reference here. Thanks in advance for any thoughts. Feeling a little vulnerable and nervous. |
I have an NT kid and this sounds like the stuff he did. He loved ceiling fans.
He is now a thriving elementary schooler who is super chatty and all about eye contact and cuddles. Hope this helps ❤️❤️❤️ |
It does. Thanks so much for the gut check. |
My now 5 year old never turned back to look at me. He was too busy enthralled in whatever he was pointing at. |
