PCSB meeting: SEED out-of-cycle review

Anonymous
The August 13 meeting, which would normally be for board training to kick off the year, will also include a review of SEED PCS. https://dcpcsb.org/special-board-meeting-quarterly-board-training-1

SEED was last before the PCSB on June 2. https://www.livebinders.com/b/3654681

Also, the list of Charter Reviews and Renewals has been updated. https://dcpcsb.egnyte.com/dl/LAoC1PCx9z
This year's review cycle includes LEARN, Global Citizens, Breakthrough, Goodwill Excel, Rocketship, Washington Leadership Academy, Briya, Latin, St. Coletta, KIPP, Thurgood Marshall, and The Next Step. Fifteen-year renewal votes for ITDS, Mundo, Richard Wright, and Shining Stars.

Of these, I'm most concerned about Rocketship, Shining Stars, and Thurgood Marshall.

What does it mean that SEED has an out of cycle review?

It means they got in trouble for various issues. If you click the link above for the June meeting you can read about it.

why are you most concerned about those schools specifically?

Because of their low scores on various metrics. If you go on DC School Report Card and look at the Summative Score for each, you can see they aren't doing well.

It looks like they got a warning a while ago because of special ed failures and then in June the warning was lifted despite evidence that they hadn't remediated all the issues. I was annoyed about that -- but maybe that's not the end of the scrutiny for SEED?

My oldest attended Thurgood and graduated in 2021 (the true pandemic year for DC schools). It met his needs, and we were very pleased. A lot has changed since then and many of the teachers and staff who kept the place afloat are gone. One of my grad students teaches there and asked why wasn't I sending my other child there. I was honest.
