Franklin and Oakton house rezoning

Anonymous
Our house in Fairfax is zoned to these schools. My younger one is still in Elementary and oldest is Middle this year.

DH thinks we could be rezoned to Johnson and Fairfax which are closer than Oakton as are Rocky Run and Chantilly High (but Chantilly seems to be bursting at the seams).

Would you sell your house now or wait? We are a single income household supporting a parent as well and DH wants to sell now so we don’t have to sell for less than what we bought for a couple of years ago (which was a pretty steep price).

I live in Oakton and also zoned for these schools.

We don’t know what’s going to happen, but with the property being purchased for the new high school, we might be ok.

I wouldn’t let the school situation determine your move. You could have the same situation in the next place you purchase your house if it’s in fcps.

If staying in Fairfax County it will be a crap shoot with the idiots running the show. If moving somewhere else sell now. Boundary changes will impact prices in some areas by a few hundred thousand.

Feel sorry for those without kids in affected areas. Won’t know what hit them when the equity they were counting on for retirement evaporates over night.

That could mean you still wouldn’t be at Oakton.

None of the proposed changes have included moving Penderbrook. What is your husband basing his concern on?

I thought the City of Fairfax wouldn’t take more county students at Johnson/FHS right now? Maybe that was a few years ago. I wouldn’t rush to sell at any rate.

Interesting that you think Oakton and Franklin are somehow that much better than Johnson and Fairfax. You will miss out on two excellent principals and many great opportunities. It is a shame to make assumptions about how our own children will fare based on test scores and demographics from other children.

I understand that your children are at Fairfax High School but indeed test scores are a big factor in parents picking a school.

OP, you should not be concerned if it gets rezoned to Chantilly. Your concern (even bigger than if it gets rezoned to Fairfax High) is if your child ends up at Abdullah (or whatever it will be named) High School. I bet that is closer to you than Oakton high.

I am sure that all the schools are fine. However, if you are at Navy or Waples Mill, it is VERY unlikely you would be redistricted to KAA. If you are at Crossfield, you have a chance of being redistricted there. And, I am sure it will be a fine school.

Well, not anymore, but you are correct. They had a great experience from K-12. Somehow, the test scores of other people didn’t impact their experience, opportunities, or post-high school options. Test scores aren’t like crowd-sourced ratings. I guess if the backgrounds of classmates worries you, they might show something, but I question that for a different reason.

If your cohorts are ESOL or the parents are not very educated, it can impact the educational experience is what all the threads here at DCUM are saying. I wonder where the kids with great experiences at Fairfax High went for college.

Gee. I know one who went to UVA. She's actually the only one I know from Fairfax. I'm sure Fairfax is a good school. Don't listen to PP. Fairfax is large enough to have a cohort for all levels.

Waples Mill- Franklin- Oakton isn’t changing.

I tend to agree. However, there have been speculative posts on all sorts of social media for months. i don't think it is a serious consideration. But, in any case, if Crossfield goes to KAA, it should put the rumors to rest.

OP. Navy but this is the last year so Elementary doesn't bother me. It's the rezoning to a different high school than Oakton is what DH is worried about. Some people could take the hit in home prices going down a few hundred. Since we only purchased a couple of years ago and it wasn't a value purchase at all, with our household income that would hurt. Just wondering if anyone thinks Abdullah purchase would affect us. I had to look that up when a PP mentioned.
