I have a 3rd grader in the AAP program and this is the first year that we've had to really deal with studying for tests and that sort of thing. I guess that 'how to study' isn't something that they went over in class, and to be honest, I was horrible at studying in school.
Can anyone recommend any good resources for learning how to study? Books, websites, classes for my child or even a class for me to teach me how to teach my child? I'd love to help my child develop good study habits to help her the rest of her time in school. |
network with other like minded parents, and above all continue to be a great involved parent..good luck
I was never taught how to study either. Most teachers send home a study guide prior to a test so go over each type of problem on it until the child can apply that to other problems. As for subjects other than math, I always just read and reread the material and sometimes wrote it down to memorize it. Flashcards work too for vocab. I got through college and grad school as well as a tough prep school never having been taught how to study. Don't wait until the night before either

How involved are parents supposed to be in AAP homework?
I gave my child a leaning styles inventory, and once we figured out her specific learning style, I was able to teach her study strategies based on that. It has worked very well for her.
That's a great question pp. My kid switched from Montessori School to traditional and didn't know how to study either. So, she did poorly with the transition. We asked the counselor for help who had some great study guides. Long story short...kid is now at an Ivy.
the teacher told us at the open house she does not want the parents helping with the the homework - and she can tell!! she wants to see what the kids can do themselves so she knows where they are. I could just see the parents in that room thinking "o.k., right, lady. "

I really struggle with not helping more than I should with homework. I've gotten to the point that I check it and tell her how many are wrong, then leave it up to her to find them. She is usually pretty good about it. I can see the teacher's point, even if it makes me a little nuts.
