What’s it like at all women’s college? Hollins/Sweet Briar

What’s it like attending an all female university?

Can’t speak to the experience but these places will be cheaper than a public college after aid. Very good value.

Hollins is excellent. I wish my kid was open to an all-women’s college

I loved attending Mary Baldwin, but sadly now it's coed.

You can participate in class and in leadership without guys trying to drown out your voice. It was great to gain self confidence.

My kid went to Smith, but a similar experience. It was great for confidence! It’s not for everyone. I’d suggest OP’s daughter try to talk to current students or do an overnight to see if it is a fit. Mine loved all women’s college and would do it over in a heartbeat. My other one would have hated it.

In what way? My daughter is socially anxious, but it doesn't come from the presence of boys. She has an older brother she gets along with great and doesn't mind pushing around.

The classroom environment is wonderful. Many shyer girls feel more comfortable speaking up, and the stakes are lower altogether.

My kid is loving Smith. She's double majoring in STEM. She's always been good in math but never thought it was for her until she got to Smith. I credit the women's college atmosphere for it. It's a really empowering environment.

The social life and vibe are different. My Smithie went to fraternity parties at UMass, etc, but it takes more work. Mine was not into all that and only went when others were going and invited her to go, but some of her friends went out to parties quite a bit. It depends on what your student is looking for. She had a lot of fun and always seemed busy. It’s just different than a coed college.

Plenty of loudmouth girls who try to drown out other girls, too.

I applied to Hollins but ultimately decided to go elsewhere.

My daughter now has a coach who went there and she’s fantastic. Smart, good people skills, trustworthy, great leader. Great representative of the school!

I had a great experience at Smith. I loved that every student leader, star athlete and top scholar was a woman. It was very empowering.

Worked with someone who studied Physics at Sweet Briar. She was very sharp.

Actually wasn't much of a problem, because loudmouth girls tend to be fine going to coed schools.
