| I have a center hall colonial. The center hall is dark! But the flanking rooms, a living room and a dining room, are very well lit with large windows. Living room is painted BM White Dove. I need to paint the dining room and center hall. The dining room has large built ins that painted white dove and I am thinking since there is such little wall space, to just paint them white dove as well. Would it be weird to paint the center hall a color? I want a peach or warm color to make it welcoming since it is so dark and “cold” already. Or does it need to be white dove as well? |
| I would do same color or lighter. |
| Farrow and Ball makes great paint. |
| White Dove would help lighten it. |
|
Is the trim white dove in all the rooms? What about wallpaper?
What’s the flooring? Rugs? Style vibe? Is there room for a console table in the hall? Do you have a lamp on it? Could you add some great sconces? |
| Personally I’d do White Dove and then bring the color with artwork. |
| I think it’s fine to do a color. White will look dreary in a dark space. |
| Peach is such a dated color. |
|
I would embrace the darkness and do a medium dark blue with violet undertones. For White Dove, plan-home recommends Blue Gaspe and French Violet. If you want something lighter, they also recommend Yukon Sky and Violet Sparkle.
Vintage Vogue could be fun if it's a small hallway. For other light "colors" I have Nelson Blue in a room that doesn't get much light and that works well. |
OP here - there is literally no direct natural light in the front hall except what filters in from the side rooms and I think White Dove tends to look gray and dingy without a lot of white. I can do another white that has warmer undertones but worried it is so boring. |
Maybe I should do “butter”! |
OP here. No room for a console. Space for one piece of artwork that is 10” wide max. It’s a tiny colonial. Rug I have is vintage with reds and blues. It’s beautiful but not very bright…. |
OP. This is my thought. I want something warm, welcoming and not cold or sterile. |

Think about changing hallway lighting.
Maybe either move away from a yellowish light bulb to a brighter white OR maybe increase the number of lumens in the hallway light bulbs. Aside: Watts are how much power is consumed. Lumens are how much light is emitted. |
Can you change the light fixture(s) and or color temperature of your lightbulbs? Can you add mirrors or mirrored things (picture frame, sculpture) to throw light? Rug color pop? |
