Pull yourself up by your bootstraps - do everything yourself mentality

Anonymous
Why do republicans have this attitude? They completely lack any empathy or sympathy for people who have different circumstances than themselves. They cannot fathom that some people have been systematically oppressed both individually and at an institutional/macro level and the “bootstrap” method doesn’t work for everybody.

I am pretty sure republicans could see a starving child and eat a sandwich in front of them and tell them they should have figured out how to get the sandwich themselves by pulling themselves up by their bootstraps and being a better person.

"pulling yourself up by your bootstraps" is literally impossible. The core principle of US Republicanism is hating humanity. They cannot survive a fair competition, so they must constantly assert their right to be privileged above others.

They don't all have that mentality. Your premise is false.

There was a politic cartoon of Barry Goldwater when he was running for president in 1964 where he sees two starving children and the caption is :"Go out and inherit your own department store."

This is true. They know it is a lie, they know they are doing harm, they're simply crooks.

Believing that poverty, hunger, illness, abuse, and disability are the result of lifestyle choices means never having to acknowledge that those things could happen to anyone (including them) and absolves them of responsibility to do anything about it.

It's more about the source of the diatribe and what they actually do with it politically.

Like corporate mouth pieces like CNN or MSNBC saying I'm such a bad person because there are people suffering in Nicaragua and I don't want them here. Never mind the fact that the same corporations are responsible for all these bad economies, but hey I'm a bad person because, because, because I don't want the corporations to bring their minions here, now for a word from our sponsors.

Here is another one. "I'm a bad person because I don't have solar panels on my roof", says the guy driving a Tesla.

DP... too many do. If there are ones who don't have that mentality, they are too quiet and ineffective. The GOP comes across as completely selfish, sociopathic, and completely unable to empathize with people struggling on the margins of society who don't look like themselves.

Progressives love the victimhood olympics.

And Republicans love kicking people when they are down. It is a central premise of MAGA conservatism. Sick.

Red states are takers while blue states are givers. Republicans are not self reliant as they claim to be.

It’s easy to lecture others about pulling themselves up by their own bootstraps when the system gives you an impressive array of material advantages that the bootstrapper couldn’t even dream of enjoying.

Republicans crowing that others should bootstrap themselves are almost invariably individuals who got lucky, exploited others, or inherited it. Few, if any, could rebuild from the ground floor if they had to start over with nothing.

Pfffft. Donald Trump is the all-time gold medalist. Everything is unfair and rigged, he’s being persecuted, he’s not getting his due. He whines nonstop on social media. He literally has told his supporters “I am a victim”.

So, Republicans believe there is a mechanism there you can bootstrap yourself. This may or may not be the case, however in rural areas it isn't cut and dry there is quite a bit of land and resources. There used to be more, but there still are. So yeah, there are people that go out and bootstrap themselves nice lives. Start working in coal mines then own them.

What exactly is the mechanism in an urban area for doing such. There isn't one it's all locked down tighter than a Microsoft SharePoint platform. BTW which school did you go to?
