| They don’t get any pay. Can they at least telework? Or do they have to schlep into the office every day for no pay? |
Why anyone wants to work there if no pay? Just do not work if no pay, telework should not be even a question |
| Ours was in every day. |
| I’m sure they’ll get super high quality applicants. |
+1. How desperate you are that you want to work for fed government without pay at this time? Don’t let them exploit you. |
FWIW our interns were unpaid until relatively recently. I think some students get law school credit for it so we will still get those applicants. I do think it is unfortunate that people without wealthy parents will effectively be excluded because they won't be able to afford to live in DC without a salary. |
I agree with you but IME most law students are living on loan money. That doesn't make it right and there's the whole issue of loan burden, but the access issue is not as bad as in undergrad or postgrad where unpaid internships really are impossible for a lot of students. Someone will immediately post to tell me they worked all through law school, and that's fine, but most don't. |
I think its probably more of a rational decision for people that dont already live here or have parents that live here. Unpaid internship at the SEC or unpaid internship in their law school or parents hometown where they won't be incurring additional housing costs. I think we will still have good applicants but I do think it will reduce the number of applicants. |
| DOJ has always had unpaid interns, although with their paid SLIP program. Many other agencies also don't pay their interns. Same for judges. It doesn't make it right, but that's the market. |
| 9:27 again. Many law schools also have summer funding available for students. Some, like UVA, have more than others. UVA gives each students something like $9K for a summer of public service / public interest. |
| I'm personally not in favor of paying student interns. I do get that people need the money, but we get almost zero value from the work they do. What we do is specialized and 100 percent of the internship is for their benefit in learning. |
| Can interns request RAs? Will the issue be moot by the time they hear back? |
My employer CEO was an intern at the SEC. He was mentored by a high level leadership at the SEC who left to become CEO of a nonprofit. The old CEO recommended his intern for the CEO position when he retired. The former intern who is now the CEO of the same nonprofit, and he makes 3.85M/year in compensation since 2016. It is a way of networking and becomes visible to senior leadership. |
We do, and that was the case long before interns were paid over the last few years. It is very hard to find a paying legal summer job, especially after 1L year, and working at the SEC looks good for your applications applying for 2L summer when firm jobs are a more realistic option for a lot of people. |
