| Dad having this done on Wednesday. I have complete faith in the surgeon and everyone has been reassuring. But it's also your heart. And it's scary. Anyone familiar with this procedure? |
|
No experience but it's better than cutting the chest open. Recover better.
I might have this one day, Best wishes! |
| My brother had a TAVR in 2016 when it was still considered experimental and so only used when it was for people too ill to have the standard one at the time. After 10 years, his first replacement valve had failed. I spent the night at the hospital the night before because I truly didn’t think he would survive the night. He was so breathless he could barely speak His procedure was at 7:00 AM. By 8:00 he was in recovery, off oxygen, his color was back to normal and he was talking easily. It felt like a miracle. This procedure is so much more widely used now. I hope your father does well too. |

Hugs, OP. My late mom ( who had open heart surgery at age 70 to repair a congenital condition) was offered TAVR at 77-declined mostly because she was told that (in perhaps her particular case) that she’d need one month of rest and recovery. She took some time to think it over and opted not to have this life-extending surgery as she felt the risks outweighed the benefits and she was very active and energetic- always was hesitant to be still and hated napping.
She died at 87. |
| My dad had this done in 2019 at the age of 79. He’s still doing well. Don’t be alarmed if they have to put a pacemaker in during the procedure. It happens sometimes. |

I had open-heart surgery to replace my aortic valve in 2013. I’ve been told when the time comes to replace the valve again, TAVR will be used. It’s a relief to know that—recovery from open-heart was long and painful.
Good luck to your dad! |
| My 78 yr old neighbor had it when she was hoping for a hip surgery but told she needed this first in order to be strong enough for the hip. She did it and was absolutely fine, in fact she was quite proud of it, they used pig products to make it. |
| Make sure he has his will and directives in place. |
That's uplifting! |
| I had an aortic valve replacement about a decade ago. It was open heart. Pretty scary, but I was surprised how quickly I recovered. I did get a little depressed; not sure if that’s an issue with TV but if so be on the lookout for it; I didn’t recognize it until I started feeling better, over a year later. |
I’m 17:32 and it actually felt good to have the push to get this done. It was something I had control over, unlike the heart surgery. |
| My Dad had the open heart version in 2014 and the surgery and recovery went well. He’ll likely have to do a TAVR in the next 10 years and he’s so grateful it’s standard practice now. Good luck, any surgery is of course scary but he’ll do great! |
| My dad had the tavr procedure about 2 months ago. He was one who needed to get pace maker less than 24 hrs after surgery. Other than that- he was back to biking 10 days later and has been doing well since! Just keep his spirits up! |

OP had it today.
Hope you are feeling ok,OP, |
| A family friend had this done at Hopkins and did great. I think she had to stay overnight for observation. |
