I’m a long term Fed and likely to be RIFd very soon. I have a few job options in the wings including one at a tiny little federal agency that’s really out of the crosshairs doing a job I’d really like. The problem is it would be 5 days a week in office and at least an hour and 15 minute commute. I’d like to stay a Fed through this (I’m about 10 years from retirement and want to keep my medical benefits), but that commute would be horrible. I’ve worked from home at least 2 days per week for the last 20 years, and 100% for 5 years.
Does anyone think agencies will get more flexibility any time soon? |
I doubt it will get better while Trump is President. You might want to consider moving closer. |
Yeah I can’t do that, I do have bonafide medical conditions and could ask for a RA, I’m just not sure if that would make a bad impression right off the bat. I guess I could tell them that before accepting the job. I literally can’t do that kind of commute. |
Is moving an option? |
You could ask if you could work 2 days a week at home. |
In Manhattan NYC pretty much everyone commutes one hour 15 minute one way every day from suburbs and do it for 30-40 years. It is not a big deal. |
Yes I’ve done it but now have physical and family circumstances where that will not work. - OP |
Time to move to where you work, stop trying to game the system |
Get a different job. This one is not for you. |
Maybe in 2029... though my agency got so desperate for people to work OT, they are letting us do that portion from home. |
NP I feel for you, but this us not new either. You quit or make sacrifices. |
I was going to become a firefighter but they wouldn’t let me WFH. |
Not clever. GTFOOH. -not OP |
OP, if you literally can’t do that kind of commute, then what do you have to lose by requesting an RA? If you literally can’t do it, why are you worried about a “bad impression”? |
You could become a MAGA political appointees. They are rarely in the office. |
