I’m flying into Newark from Sweden in September, landing around 3pm. I plan on taking Amtrak down to DC. If you have done this, how much time would you allow between landing and getting to Amtrak(Immigration/customs/etc -do NOT have Global Entry)? Thanks
No idea on entry, but I’d give 30 minutes to figure out the airport trams getting from the airport to the train station. You have to go from terminal A or C to the Amtrak station at the end of the tram line. Once you’re there it’s easy as the Amtrak station itself is tiny.

Three hours? Guessing here. We went the other way in June and our train was 40 min late. So that can happen
|
If no GE and arriving at a peak time, Customs and Immigration could take an hour - or could be less. Get the Passport App from US CBP on your phone now, as that might speed entry.
Amtrak is pretty frequent although last train looks like it is around 5:30 from EWR and if you get the flex ticket you can change it for free. Unless you’re travelling on a holiday weekend you could probably even just buy the Amtrak ticket on the train (they don’t check before you get on). Worst case scenario you backtrack to Newark Penn Sta and catch the train from there if you miss the last one to DC from EWR.
I wouldn't buy the ticket on the train--that is crazy expensive to buy last minute. When we bought out DC-EWR tickets 4 months in advance they were 30$, the week before I looked and they were like 170$.
This. It’s so frustrating. Makes me less likely to take train from Newark. |
I’ve always found it quicker and cheaper to just transfer to DCA at Newark. Did you price the ticket through to DCA? Also, the last time I took Amtrak to Newark, there were tons of aggressive homeless people in the Newark station. I was with my 11 year old dd who is pretty street savvy, and she was still in shock at what they were yelling and their aggressiveness. This was early afternoon
Newark Penn is not the same station as the station at EWR. Taking Amtrak from EWR will not have the same issue... that station is in the airport and isn't frequented by homeless the same way Newark Penn is.
We did that trip, Newark to Sweden, RT (saved a fortun in airfare), but we drove up to Newark and did economy parking at a nearby hotel with an airport shuttle. 4 RT Amtrak tickets were way more than the parking for the 2 weeks we were in Sweden
