Can Bermuda grass be practically controlled without Roundup

I’m close to calling it quits. Lawn expert says that only glyphosate will kill it. Other option is Zoysia which squeezes Bermuda grass out. I’m not sure what to do. Brown lawn in winter or chemicals to fight Bermuda grass.

Zoysia is fantastic. I had a huge zoysia lawn in my old house and I really miss it. It was completely impervious to weeds. The brown in winter never bothered me. Everything’s dead anyways.

What are you trying to do there??
If you want a green lawn in winter, you simply seed some winter grass in late fall.

Bermuda grass can't be practically controlled period. At least not without consistent chemical application.
I, too, am ready to give up. Tired of paying for lawn service, tired of chemicals, and tired of the Bermuda returning and spreading despite all efforts.
Time to reduce the lawn and plant natives.

One lawn service was honest with me and said that Roundup with reseeding in fall is the only option. But I live in MoCo, so no Roundup. I’m trying to get a hold of the newer zoysia varieties like Innovation.

OP here. I found this article.

I see that they are pushing for a cutting height of 4 inches. I only did around 3.5 inches. I might try for one more summer with the shag lawn.

You probably don’t need to do the round up if you aerate and overseed every year - which is a huge pain and very expensive. But honestly why? A year round green yard is weird. You won’t have all Bermuda grass, so it won’t be completely brown, it will take on a bronzed hue which is seasonally appropriate.

Look satellite images of farm land, it’s all brown during the winter. It’s part of the natural process.

There’s a reason a perfect consistent weed free green lawn was a sign of immense wealth in previous centuries (before round up) because it’s extremely difficult and extraordinarily expensive.

You can put plastic turf to cover your yard.

does bermuda grass die all the way in winter? or is it just overwintering?

It's perennial and lasts over winter same as most turf grasses.

Only way to have green lawn year round in a temperate climate with winters is to plant two grasses, one that grows in winter and one in summer.

What grasses grow in winter?

10 years ago we killed our bermuda grass section on purpose (which I blame on Verizon when they put in Fios bc it is only in that area) and it just came back. We do nothing now and just live with it. It has spread a little but not the whole front lawn. yet.

It’s just dormant in winter. Not a problem.
