Countertops that are not quartz, marble, quartzite, wood, or stainless steel

Redoing our kitchen. We usually try to shop ethically. We’re not perfect but we avoid plastics, politically questionable companies and so on. Countertops seem to be dominated by quartz which apparently is giving all the workers silicosis. We would do granite or soapstone but those are too dark. Marble is so sensitive. Don’t like quartzite, wood or stainless steel. Any other options?

Concrete is an option. A friend has some kind of counter fabricated onsite that has little bits of rock in it (maybe concrete as a binder).

You could look into Formica which looks much nicer now than it used to. Or Corian. On the old Gardenweb (now Houzz), there are still people who love white Corian and think it's the best surface overall.

I have soapstone and like it, but it does chip and it's dark.

Corian and its imitators wear like iron. We have done two kitchen rehabs and I've gone with Corian both times because I don't want maintenance.

I think it's called Blanco Romano, and we picked it out at a stone place on 95 and Konterra Rd

Not the PP but do yourself a favor and hit a granite yard. So many choices, granite and quartzite. If you are near Chantilly, East West Marble is one.

I’m surprised you don’t like quartzite. It’s beautiful and a natural stone, yet extremely durable. Is it too expensive? Is there an ethical issue? Ours looks like new 5 years in. No cracks, stains or etching. I’d do it again.

Soapstone is pretty soft so likely to scratch.

There are very light granite options. I would go to a granite place that has lots of choices. I think you would be surprised. If in VA, there are lots of places near the 28 intersection with 50 in Chantilly.
