Magnesium?

Anonymous
Teen DD (ADHD/ASD) is having terrible insomnia. We aren’t sure the cause because she’s usually a pretty good sleeper. Doctor suggested magnesium- I thought she said 400 mg Magnesium Sulfate but that doesn’t look right. Anyone have experience? What kind is gentler on the stomach and most helpful with sleep?

Try magnesium glycinate, 400 mg. Also try to get her more exercise and to get outside in the morning.

Are they taking ADHD meds later because of summer. We switch to short acting.

For magnesium, you can do glycinate but I think threonate is much better. I suggest taking a few hours before bedtime.

You can also try a Benadryl and see if that helps just to kickstart their sleep. Sometimes when kids are off schedule and overtired they need to get back to a rhythm and then they sleep better again.

I also suggest no screen, warm shower, and no processed foods or sweets after dinner.

How are you tolerating that? 120 mg has given me so major GI distress as an adult.

Magnesium citrate. This also helps with constipation from Atomoxetine. Made a huge difference. Just take nature's promise for CVS. Lavender heat pillow and weighted blanket have helped a lot too.

Absolutely NO on the Magnesium Citrate. As a nurse, we give that to clear out bowels for scopes. It also doesn't cross the blood brain barrier.

There are about 7 types of magnesium. Please do your research.

My son takes Calm, which is magnesium citrate, BUT he also struggles with constipation at times, so Calm kinds of hits both issues mildly.

I've been trying to find a magnesium glycinate to try because that is supposed to be better for sleep.

If someone has a magnesium glycinate that they like and trust, please let me know!

Thanks everyone! We’ve actually been using epsom salt baths before bed which has helped. I’m reluctant to try a supplement because there’s so many options and she’s SO sensitive to side effects!

It's magnesium. It's a mineral - be real OP

Magnesium glycinate. Read the book finally focused.

Magnesium glycinate helps my son fall asleep better than any prescription meds we have tried.

Yeah and she had uncontrollable diarrhea for 5 days until we figured out that it was the epsom salt baths. Call me crazy….

My doctor recently recommended this for me to help with sleep and becoming more regular with the bathroom, so watch that.

For my teen with adhd and night anxiety who struggles with sleep, he takes a low dose of melatonin. The doctor is fine with that nightly.
