My Kid Has Offers for Ivies/Stanford and wants UMiami. Help?

Anonymous
My kid is a recruited athlete and he has offers for several top Ivies, including Yale, Harvard, Columbia, Brown, Dartmouth. He also has offers at Stanford and Duke.

However, he wants to go to University of Miami for the south Florida lifestyle, parties, and girls. I am very frustrated and am trying to convince him to pick one of the more academically prestigious options. He tells me that "college is what you make out of it, and the experience is the same everywhere."

What would you do if your kid were in this position?

Is he getting scholarships at these schools?

If not, tell him he's free to take out $300K of debt to attend Miami. His student loan payment will be $2000/month when he graduates.

It’s been discussed several times before. Do a search for advice.

Tell him that he'll have far better options - women-wise - with an Ivy or Stanford degree.

This did not happen.

If you're paying, you get a veto. Period.

assuming he graduates from Ivy or Stanford

Let him go to Miami. He clearly lacks the brains to succeed at the other schools you mentioned. He’d probably flunk out anyway.

+1 Give him the list of options you support, and have him pick his favorite.

What sport does he play and do they have the sport at Miami?

Correct. Also, OP is a troll.

Trolling. While it's possible to be recruited, likely letters for athletic recruits have not happened yet. Not all recruited athletes are accepted at HYPS, maybe 80% of those recruited end up with an actual offer of admission at this level.

No one chooses UMiami over HYPS unless there is a cost difference.
