DD is moving into her first apartment and asked for my help bc I pride myself on my excellent organizations skills 😂
Her apartment, particularly her bedroom, is very small. I’m only focused on that room bc she is sharing the apartment with others and I don’t want to be that Mom who swoops in and takes over. The landlord told them they are not allowed to put nails in the walls, even if they spackle them upon move out. The leaves using Command Strips and hooks which, frankly don’t work that great in many situations. Because there isn’t a lot of floor space, it would be great to use wall shelves but it would be only for very lightweight things. Well get some under bed storage, back of door hanging storage, etc. But I am wondering if anyone knows of something that works better than command strips for fixing things to the wall without damaging the wall at all. Thanks |

Well, your other option is to use construction adhesive which I'm sure the landlord would definitely not be into.
You could use floor to ceiling poles that hold the horizontal shelves or whatever rails she needs. Personally, I would just nail and screw as needed into the wall and spackle and paint the holes on moveout. |

Not what you asked, but, if she hasn’t purchased furniture yet, would she be open to getting a loft bed? If so, she could use some of the space under the bed for for shelves.
What kinds of things do you want to hang? Are you talking artwork? Hooks for hanging clothing? Something else? |
You would do that even though you had been explicitly told not to do that? So, there goes your security deposit, your chance of getting a good recommendation from your landlord in the future, and possibly your relationships with your roommates who may be penalized by the landlord you’ve deliberately pissed off? |
| Can she prop the bed up on blocks, that would give more under-bed storage, like in dorms. Also over-desk shelving, and get a stepping stool to reach the upper part of the closet easier. |
| There are headboards that are shelving units |
That's a good idea! So is the headboard shelves idea of the PP. Could also get a big sheet of plywood, paint it, and attach pegboard to it, then lean it against a wall or wedge it into place with tension bar or something. Tons of things to hang on pegboards with hooks. |
| How small is the bedroom? |
|
Room is 81sq feet. On paper she should be able to fit a full bed and nightstand, but not much else. Will definitely use under bed storage. Not sure if there is enough room for a headboard with shelves. Also, the ceilings aren’t that high and there is a ceiling fan, so can’t do something like one of the ikea beds that have room underneath for a dresser, chair, etc.
The closet is… bigger than a coat closet. There’s that! She will have to keep most of her clothing at home and do swaps when she visits. I think we will have to use lots of stick on heavy duty hooks she can hang stuff on. But it would be nice if we could hang shelves. I will share the plywood/pegboard idea with DD. She’s craftier than me and could handle that. She wanted to live in the city and she can get to work easily. First apartments! She’ll have lots of memories/laughs after she moves out. |

So around 8x10 feet?
How high is the ceiling? |

Does your DD wear a lot of dresses? If not, maybe she can make the closet rod two levels.

Whatever maximizes space. Buy collapsible products like strainers and laundry baskets. https://www.target.com/p/collapsible-laundry-hamper-endcap-white-1pc-brightroom-8482/-/A-93282056 |
Thats all our bedrooms. Full size bed with metal frame and fabric headboard. Small nighstand or table, tall dresser or cabinet. |
| Does her bed have a footboard? She can put hooks on the footboard if she does. I’ve actually done this on DDsbed at home |
| She should keep very little stuff at her apartment. Now is a good time to learn to be a minimalist. |
