I am looking for feedback on Pitt in general and the nursing program in particular. Not looking for info on the admissions picture, but on the vibe, culture, fun factor, etc.
Also, looking for insight into the nursing program. I know it is well regarded. How are clinicals? Are the science classes limited to the nursing students or are you taking with all pre health majors? Thank you! |
I can't answer all your questions, but my friend's daughter just graduated from that program. She had a GREAT experience and easily found a good first job.
One of Pitt's attributes is that is a city truly focused on "meds and eds." There is no shortage of places to do rotations. This kid was in the honors program and played a club sport. She still felt like she had time for a social life and she got very good grades. |
Very well regarded. Also very expensive if OOS my daughter got in but did not go as got no merit aid. |
Thanks posters. |
Pitt nursing is very well respected but you need to think about how much "RN from Pitt" vs "lower cost option to RN" is worth. |
Worth it if her college experience is great. Great spirit, sports, social life. Does Pitt have this? |
Yes, Pitt has all of that - our child graduated in May, and is gainfully employed as are his friends |
my daughter went to Pitt BSN – had a scholarship and was an RA. She wanted good clinical experiences to help with that first job, a strong peer group, and also a great college experience.

Thanks for the posts. The last two posters, can you expand on the vibe and social life? We are all in that it has a great reputation and job opportunities will be abundant!
How do the students handle the weather (I am Syracuse so been there). I know Pitt has good sports. Do a lot of students participate? Greek like doesn’t seem too dominate. My daughter does think she wants a sorority. What has been your experience? Again looking more for vibe. We are plugged into the admissions deal. I am tracking the housing and over enrollment situation. Thanks! |
I went to Pitt in parent times. Pitt has an active but not socially dominant Greek community. My parents and husband were Greeks but I preferred not to join. I also went to PSU for freshman year. Greek life is more prominent at PSU. Regarding Greek life for women, your daughter should research what chapters are there and whether their principles appeal to your daughter. Which sororities are strong or cool on campus varies across schools and from decade to decade. You might be able to look at internet gossip if you dig around. If I was looking to pledge, I would be researching the set of sorority choices at different universities. When I was at Pitt, the sororities were in dorms (also true at PSU at that time). Some people prefer Greek chapters that have independent houses. Universities vary but the big issues with Greek partying always revolve around underage drinking and personal safety, and how much the authorities want to be responsible for. If you are familiar with Syracuse weather, Pittsburgh will be similar. Maybe slightly warmer and less snowy. I wouldn't factor it into a decision. I lived in MoCo and Pittsburgh and did not find it difficult to go back and forth between the slightly different climates. |
My daughter is at Pitt now and absolutely loves it. Cheering for the football, basketball and volleyball are definitely popular. Unlike some schools (PSU, Wisconsin, etc), students can easily buy ticket packages to the games - no lottery. The big games for all three of those sports sell out, with many more wishing they could go.
Sororities: rush is in January. Membership is only required for mixers, not regular frat parties, so plenty of women who like going to frat parties don’t bother joining. Pitt also has a bar/small club scene, so partying is not all focused on fraternities. The nursing student/sorority girl is definitely a “type” at Pitt, but not a dominant one. If she actually wants an SEC school, she should not expect to find that vibe at Pitt. It is an urban campus, with a diverse, very liberal student body. I’m sharing the above in an attempt to describe the vibe from my daughter’s mouth to your daughter’s ears - believe me I know how it sounds! |
Pitt for sure has this. Super school spirit (Hail to Pitt!), great social atmosphere, awesome city to explore. The kids who go to Pitt tend to LOVE Pitt. My kid picked Pitt over schools with a bit higher rankings for this very reason. It's just a fabulous place to spend 4 years. |
Honestly Pitt sounds like a great fit for your kid. Super well regarded nursing plus fun social scene. |
