What kinds of internships/jobs have your students done during their college summers? |
My niece worked for the local government with children who were in CPS. They were shocked at some of the behavior of the kids, down to 6 yr olds. She is now a therapist, and refuses to work with children. That's how traumatized she was. |
Here’s one for next year:

Working with traumatized children is not for the faint of heart. |
This is for high school students. |
research with a professor or work with a nonprofit in the community (adult care homes, family services groups, there are many in every urban/suburban area) |
I was a psychology major for a year. I did two semesters of research with a cognitive psychology professor on short and long term memory. It was interesting, but I determined that I did not want to go an academic route (PhD in psychology). I ended up with an econ undergrad and an MBA. Economics and business often rely on psychological insights about how people think, work, select products to buy, etc. |
Years ago I did a summer internship at a psychiatric hospital after my junior year. |
My DD spent 2 weeks at Colby one summer, including visits to local psychiatric units.
Also, not an internship but she took some classes with Johns Hopkins and Columbia over the summers as well. It all helps. |
Our psych major started at inner city preschool, and then went at a private care center that works with traumatized kids and teens with mental health, behaviors, trauma, etc. |
Fun times. |
Freshman and sophomore year, research with college lab/professor. Junior year, worked in clinical setting with troubled teens.
Also got published before she graduated. |
