| With so many people out of jobs, are they starting to move to other states? Or are they able to find jobs here? |
| Just depends on what your skills are. Would assume no one is in a hurry to give up low interest rates on their houses right now. Most of the people I know who have left are renters. |
| I don't know anyone out of work. I just got a friend of a friend a job, because he is a teacher and wanted to work summer time. My own workplace is hiring and we can't find workers. |
What industry? What type of workers? |
| My unemployed friend (former USAID contractor) is interviewing for out of state jobs. They are single and subletting though. |
| It will take time. Time to find a job, then to find housing, sell dc housing, move. Months/years. If the person is in a lease they may have to stay until lease ends. There will be a lot of unemployed in this area for a while, not contributing to tax base. It won’t be pretty. |
| The single, childless, unemployed are leaving. I personally know of two people who have left that are in those categories. They were renters so they let their lease run out and both went back to their home cities (Houston and Boston). The Gen Z younger people who are getting laid off are going back home to their parents. |
| I know one RIFed person and the spouse still has a job so they're staying put for now. Youngest is a rising senior, so they may sell house and move somewhere cheaper after graduation. |
| There are many houses for sale in my neighborhood. I think they are already leaving. |
what neighborhood is this? |
It's a reasonably priced neighborhood in Northeast DC. |
| They already are, OP. The real estate market isn't at peak Sellers' market, which is a nice change from the last 5 years. |
| People with working spouses and kids in school aren't leaving if they can possibly help it. Sorry to the real estate vultures hoping to profit. |
Washington is still a bigger job market than where people came from. I'm an ex-Pittsburgher. In the '80s and 90's, Pittsburghers looked to the DMV during recessions. Especially for knowledge worker jobs. MoCo was more like home than Philly and closer. |
| In my close friend group, two just sold their homes and are leaving the country. Many unemployed just on my street. |
