Would you consider 10k in stocks, such as a a Vanguard account, the same as savings?
(Not a retirement, pre-tax, 401k) If you wanted to amp up your savings by 10k, and you’re considering where to put it.. would you consider it savings to put it into stock market account /ETF/ mutual fund? Say, with Vanguard or whoever. What do you say? |
| We only put money we don’t need in the short term into our brokerage account. So for us- it would be long term savings. It’s definitely savings no matter how you look at it (since you aren’t spending it…) but if it’s needed for something in the short term, I’d put it somewhere else |

I consider mine savings

I consider it long term investing- the only time we've ever removed funds from a brokerage was an emergency (very expensive) house repair.
For larger liquid cash and slightly higher return, we use a money market. Once we hit a certain level of investment, retirement, etc. we keep less cash on hand. |
| I consider it savings in general, but I also look at how much cash I have and like to keep some in a money market to be available as needed. I don’t want to be forced to sell stocks when the market is down because I didn’t keep enough savings on hand. |

Yes. My checking account has 1-2 months of expenses. Other easily-accessible funds (others may refer to them as emergency funds) are in stocks/ETFs/funds in a taxable account at Vanguard.
I've found that 0 percent credit cards can also be used for emergency fund purposes, or a short-term loan from the bank (that I pay back in days after stock sales clear). Another good option right now (because of high rates) for shorter-term savings needs is a high-yield savings account. I don't have one as I try to keep my # of accounts and institutional relationships to a minimum. I hope that answers your question. |
| Savings equals income less expenditure. So yes, it is savings. |

Op here. Thank you.
We keep our savings in conservative interest-bearing (or 1 solid month in our checking). We save longterm in mutual funds that are pre-tax. I’ve always thought of market money as something extra. But we want to try putting 10k of savings in the market at a reasonable point (buy low). We may move money in at a regular rate, sometimes money out. But keeping at 10k average there. |
