Hi. I would like some advice. I just found out that my spouse took out a $80k personal loan to help a family member. The interested rate is 8% and the term is for 3 years. The first monthly payment has just been made on July 1.
We will not get it back because his family member lost their shirt then house day trading for 10 years, obviously in the home country. Their spouse never worked. Could you please educate me - Should I pay back the 80k outright if I have cash, or given inflation, the current interest rate and stock market, pay monthly for 3 years? Thank you in advance. |
Depends on the terms of the loan. Can you front load the payment? I mean is that allowed? |
Take your time to pay it. So, several idiots in his family. |
80k for 3 years @ 8% is about $2500 a month and you pay back about 90k so the loan "cost" is about 10k.
It's up to you on how to handle this - no "right" or "wrong" answer, really. If you have the money and it wont impact you/your lifestyle, why pay the 10k for the loan, just pay it back now. But, if it would otherwise impact lifestyle, etc then lt ride for the 3 years knowing what the cost is. Good luck. |
I’d book a marriage counseling appointment too while I’m at it, if indeed this loan was taken out without your knowledge. |
what does "obviously in the home country" mean? That's not obvious. |
I would pay off the loan. You have a hard time to invest your money without taking a lot of risk to get 8%. |
Divorce. He's not trustworthy, stealing money from your household to give away to scammers. |
Must be India. It's hot there. Anywhere else you'd lose your house before you lose your shirt. |
