How to find a low cost lawyer?

Anonymous
Looking at a potential uncontested divorce and need to keep the costs as low as possible. Has someone used the county resources?

If you are in MD or even DC, it is extremely easy to do it yourself. I did it. Never paid a dime.

If you're in northern VA The Women's Center might be able to point you in the right direction.

You need to indicate the jurisdiction you're in to get helpful responses.

If in DC, you can use the free services from the District. You probably never want to use anyone whose claim to fame is that they're low cost. Everyone needs high quality legal help. The people in the DC mediation office are top notch, based on personal experience. I'm an attorney and I used them with great results. https://www.dccourts.gov/superior-court/multi-door-dispute-resolution-division

Cannot speak to divorce lawyers but you get what you pay for is true for lawyers. If a lawyer is offering a really low rate, there is probably a reason. Not saying you need a high-priced lawyer but seeking out a low-cost lawyer is not the way to go. Signed, A Lawyer.

Susan Butler is terrible. Waste of money. Do not use.

If it's truly uncontested and everything is very simple (no retirement, no investment properties, etc.) then don't hire an attorney.

But do not EVER hire an attorney who sells themselves to you on their low cost or how inexpensive they are. That means they are desperate for clients. Because they can't get any. Because they're not good.

I am also a lawyer and I disagree. Divorce lawyers are known especially to unnecessarily drive costs up. And what you are encouraging is unethical and obscene. An uncontested divorce should not bankrupt a family.

Please do better. You’re disgusting.
