I need advice for a 10 year old boy to learn biking. A private instructor will charge me $250/hr for 1 lesson, and I am shocked with the price. He says normally kid can learn how to bike in 1-2 lessons. Pedalhead bike half day camp is around $300 for Monday to Friday 9am to noon. It is more affordable, but I am concerned of the group class ratio and quality. Any advice? He is not good with balancing, and I cannot push him or teach him. Which way should I do, try the private instructor or the pedalhead camp ? If you know anyone affordable & good at teaching biking class 1:1 in Gaithersburg, please share. |
Op here. I wish there is a package deal that guarantee kid can learn how to bike. I have no confidence in my son able to learn to bike even with 2 hours private 1:1 lessons or from a camp. I hope I am wrong. |
Rei used to have 2 hr group classes. So does Waba and those are free. |
He can learn in 2 hrs. The basics and then you reinforce. The way they teach it: take the pedals off the bike and lower the seat a bit so few touch the ground solidly. Use the bike on a small incline as a balance bike. Once you can balance for 20+ seconds you can put the pedals back on and go. I've taken one class with a 7 year old and used the same method with a 5 year old years later. It works just going over and over down/across the same way. The incline helps going a bit but you can do this on an almost flat surface. |
REI had bike lessons. Double check your local store.
Have you reached out to your local bike shops? The few near me (Bike Lane, Bike Pro Shop, Trek, etc) have various workshops, group rides, and I thought I saw lessons advertised). Call and ask. |
