Is it too late to plant seeds?

Bought echinacea seeds. Too late to plant, or is this ok given the extended summer in the DMV?

Way too late for echinacea. It is a slow grower to start with. You would be better off saving them for next Feb, start them indoors and transplant around May.

Echinacea requires cold stratification so you can do either of these very easy tasks if you want a head start on next year:

1. Direct sow into the garden in the fall or winter. What doesn’t get eaten will grow in Spring.

2. Winter sow. Cut a clear milk jug nearly in half, fill with potting soil. Water the soil. Add the seeds, tape the hinged jug back together and take the cap off. Do this in late fall or winter and set it outside and ignore it. By Spring, you’ll have seedlings that won’t require hardening. Be warned, you will get a ton of successful plants this way. Make sure you have the space to transplant them.
