Adult dress up

Did anyone think that when you grew up that there would be regular occasions where you wore dresses and high heels? Or was it just me?

That was me, as well. And it was my life until the past ten years or so . . . society and fashion have turned away from that kind of formality on a regular basis.

Yes! I envisioned a job where I was always in heels. Now that just sounds ouch.

No.

Agree, it's embarrassing. Going to the theatre in any major city is just bad and same thing for "formal" restaurants. Even going to formal events people dress like slobs.

I'm 50. After graduating college I wore a skirt suit or dress with heels 5 days a week for the first 15 years of my working life. Now I work from home wearing a tshirt and shorts.

My teenage daughter recently asked me what pantyhose even are.

I don't miss dressing up at all.

I'm 55 and wore pantyhose and heels every day during the same period as you. And dresses with big pearl or gold buttons. Very chic (not!).

Lol. I commuted on Metro in skirt suits and dresses with sneakers on.

I came to love pants suits. Women's clothes are beautiful but more difficult to wear and care for.

My favorite brand of panty hose exited the market and it was the only I kind I could usually put on without a snagging incident.

Since fashion continues to get cheaped out, and designers don’t make practical, durable business wear at department store prices anymore, I guess I'm calmly resigned to being frumpy by former standards.

I wear dresses and heels all the time, like daily. I have no idea what you're talking about.

I’m not yet 40 but I really do miss wearing clothes and outfits in rooms of people who put some thought into it as well

It’s frivolous and unnecessary of course but it really was fun

I want to wear a fancy ballgown, waltz and eat good finger foods in a nice venue. And have that be a regular thing.

Get away from me with that skirt suit!

I’m 45. During the first decade of my career, I would have been embarrassed to go past the lobby if I weren’t wearing heels unless it was snowing. In crazy weather like heat or rain I would swap my shoes in the subway concourse (not a scary platform, this was like nice under hours hallways in Rockefeller center) or around the corner.

My first job even required legs to be covered, which HR translated for us so we would understand that was nylons. Tights were not allowed and understood to be too babyish or artsy.

I went to grad school and moved around and at some point I realized I wasn’t wearing my suits anymore as I packed them in one apartment to move and realized they still had dry cleaning tags on them from another state. It was a slow fade. I feel so sad that it slipped away in a gradual way or else I would have enjoyed the ease of it a bit more. I hate piecing together professional looks from the current fashion offerings.

Spouse and I don't dress up for work, but, still have times, pretty much multiple times, per year that we do get dressed up. Black tie weddings (nieces and nephews at this point), annual event at spouses work is black tie, an organization I volunteer with also has an annual gala that is pretty over-the-top

I enjoy this, and am very grateful I do not have to get dressed up on a M-F basis

I think this is a socioeconomic class thing. People with money still dress up and still attend fancier functions and events.
