Georgetown joining common app

Will joining the common app cause an influx of applications who just want to check off a box to apply? Like Northeastern?

Georgetown is DS’s first top choice and he will be applying next year.

I’m afraid the acceptance rates will decline significantly.

Yes, OP, all of that is inevitable. Acceptance rates will be SLAC/Ivy-level moving forward. If they're joining Common App, they really need to add ED to balance it out.

I feel that it is still advantageous to continue using the old portal for the coming year. AOs are familiar with the old portal, and can quickly pick up what they need there.

If the applicant is a one-sitting high score, another reason for using the old portal. In common app, there is nowhere you can indicate that.

You provide your test dates, so it's clear. DC did add a note under additional info that it was one sitting, though I felt it unnecessary.

Georgetown doesn't go on the common app until next year (HS class of 2027), fyi.

My kid is class of 2027

They have a two part application and may be inflating their numbers a bit already.

Aside from requiring all.the tests, Georgetown's current application is not unique in a good way. Common app will make things so much more streamlined for students, and even more for schools with numerous Georgetown applicants

I've heard this from previous applicants. The switch to common app makes so much sense - they're special but not so special that people will go out of their way to throw in a separate app. They're not MIT. However, I do think they're going to be flooded with apps, including ones from candidates that are top tier, making it hard for them to figure out how to sort through everything, but that's their problem.

The increase in reported selectivity won't make it any more selective for your child. 90% of the new applicants will be immediately discarded (while GU keeps the application fees).

More like 10%. Yes, it will be even harder to get in.

If your child is a well qualified applicant who really loves GU and is willing to put in the extra work required to fill out the GU application, the current system helps them. Lots of well qualified applicants consider GU, look at its current app, and then decide that they don't like GU enough to do the extra work.

Then who cares what his "first top choice" is today? It'll probably change.

Well, they can certainly use the $$. Their endowment is terrible.

No matter what their application process is it will never be more significant than who you know when it comes to getting acceptance. I have only know one kid, my nephew, who got into GU on merit. At least I think he did.
