VA Catholic High School Honors—9th grade year

Anonymous
DD is enrolling in Arlington Diocese Catholics this fall as a freshman, and currently has 5 honors classes. She is a good student w/ good study habits but also wants to play sports and be in clubs. She previously didn’t want to do her fall sport but now thinks she might.

Is this realistic or will it be too much? I know every kid is different but now trying to make sure she is set up for success and weighing options. Class change deadline is looming and thinking about allowing her to drop down to non-honors for 1-2 classes. Thoughts?

If she is a strong student she should be fine with honors classes and a fall sport.

Op here—thanks! Any idea of homework time/commitment?

Not at an Arlington Diocese school, but at another area Catholic high school with a child that has a similar course load, and we had similar concerns. They opted not to play a Fall sport but then played one in the Spring.

For what it's worth, we actually found that participation in a sport to bring a lot more structure and order to the day and that forced DC to stay on top of their homework much better than when they had more free time in the afternoon.

Agree though we found fall sports were better since they were over before first semester exams and didn’t interfere with AP exams or finals in the spring. Not that one can necessarily choose the season.

My overachieving high strung #1 would start at 8 and work til midnight or 1. My very smart but more laid back #2 in same classes did maybe 2-3 hrs / night. So kid-dependent. I’d have to wager more kids are like my #2 than my psycho #1 (said with love.)

You might have a couple weeks after school starts to reevaluate. I know kids at our Arlington catholic high who dropped from honors to non-honors (or study hall) during the first few weeks of school.
