I have heard from multiple sources now there is going to be a decent size shake up next Spring.
No more “Grandfather” rule next Spring for ECNL Clubs paired with MLS Next. You either join GA or you are out of MLS Next. Time will tell. Don’t care if I am wrong or right. Seeing how the landscape changes so much, I won’t be surprised. |
| Yes that is the plan. |
Way to completely couch that very big statement. I'm saying this - it might be completely wrong, but if it happens I'm correct? I have that right? |
| It definitely seems possible. If true, what clubs are left with MLSN for boys and ECNL for girls? I think it's only Bethesda. |

I'm so glad that my DD will be entering her final year of club play at that point. College commitment will be made and will be playing more so to get ready for that adventure.
So tired of all this BY v. SY and GA v. ECNL nonsense... Good luck to those who have kids that are just getting involved in club soccer. |

| My DD and I look for three key things in a club: quality coaching, consistent playing time, and meaningful exposure. You’d think that would be easy to find but with coaches constantly jumping clubs and teams switching leagues, it feels nearly impossible. |
|
It's not a shakeup it's a shuffling. The players and coaches in the DMV will not be changing. The only thing that changes is how they are grouped together to form teams.
No matter how you reshuffle the cards it's still the same deck. |
I'd argue this is the worst time ever for your kid to be entering college (sorry for her). Sure things will change, but much younger kids will have time to adapt. |
The coaches and clubs might say the same thing with players constantly switching teams. |
Then the pesky age grouping comes into play. What if GA stays BY? Is it the same deck now if your kid is Q4 on an ECNL team that moves to GA? |

Yep. The coach part is the toughest, I don't think there's any consistency at the clubs around here, it's always changing. Not completely bad but just goes to show you that there aren't any real youth clubs around here when there's that much movement between staff and players always. Real clubs have consistency. |
Yes, age is just another way to group the same set of players. For one specific kid any of these changes has potential to be a major disruption to them. But overall, the soccer landscape will not be very different. Same players, same coaches, grouped into different teams. All of the current problems with youth sports remain. Cost, politics, travel, player development, recruiting don't go away. |
OP here. I disagree. She can play next year at her current ECNL club at U17 and her U18 season will be a formality. Bigger issue we are dealing with now is the continuing changing landscape of college sports and how it impact her recruiting. Roster limits, settlement agreement, fully funded teams or not. It's a lot to work through. Younger kids (like U12 now) can adapt. The kids caught at the U14/U15 levels are going to have it rough for a bit as clubs jump leagues and players want to find what's best for them moving forward. Ugh. Glad we are approaching the end. |
