For those of who own classic cars…

Thinking about purchasing a classic 911 - air cooled. Any advice on where to purchase and pitfalls to avoid? Tia

I don't have one but like looking at them on bringatrailer. You can ask the seller questions, and there are a lot of photos and videos. I'm sure you can look at it in person if you live close enough as well. Never looked into what happens if you get a lemon, though. May or may not be the best place to get a deal, just depends on the interest and bidding.

You need to be far more knowledgeable than you appear to be, if you're asking on this platform.

You're speaking of a potentially expensive acquisition, which can have hidden issues affecting true value. At a minimum, plan on a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified specialist and be well-informed about realistic pricing for cars of the age, trim level, and other variables which you are considering. It'd be easy to overpay out of ignorance.

I agree with this. If I were looking I would start with a Porsche forum to get familiar with your specific model and find out where people usually buy them. Bringatrailer is probably where most of these cars get sold and you can get a sense of current prices but you will be buying sight unseen.

You can try intersport at Tysons. They specialize in used Porsche sales and have quite a few of older models. Not sure how reputable they are.

IMA Motors in Chantilly. Intersport is ok. Tons of specialty Porsche shops in the DMV.
