Summer camp counselor pay

Anonymous
DD thought she was getting paid today, halfway thru the camp. They even had a discussion yesterday at work about it. The director said she couldn't stay late today to pass out checks. Then two hours later DD gets an email that all counselors will be paid at the end of the 6 weeks in one check. Is this the usual?? Last year someone else was running the camp and they got paid every other week. I fear that the kids won't get paid at all. The camp is very underenrolled. Something seems shady.

Did she sign a contract?

Sounds shady but what does the contract or emails or handbook say? I suspect they are low on funds and she may not get paid.

If you are in Maryland it against the law. You have to pay every two or at least twice per month.

As a business owner, if she isn’t getting paid now, especially if the excuse they originally gave was not being able to hand out checks at the end of the day, there is a very strong chance she will not get paid at the end of the six weeks. That money is already gone.

You should teach your daughter to advocate for herself and respond back to the email, stating this not what we agreed to. If the check I was scheduled to receive at the end of the day today, is not available when I show up on Monday, I will be seeking employment elsewhere and contacting a labor lawyer.

My kid gets paid every two weeks, in MD. I'm sorry your kid was not paid - this does look very shady!

So went back and looked at the contract and it says paid at the end. So our bad on that although I don't know why the director said they would get paid yesterday then, before taking it back. This is in Virginia. Director seems incompetent in more than this regard.

OK, it's a reprieve. I hope the camp director follows through.

Update: counselors got paid for the first 3 weeks! One check for the second 3 weeks at completion.

Must be a Virginia thing because our DC didn't get paid for mandatory trainings until July 10, over 4 weeks after they participated in them, and 2 weeks of being an actual counselor. I don't think it's legal in Virginia either -- pay must be biweekly or semi-monthly. I haven't said anything, but it's annoying for sure.
