My kid has some excellent activities which are related to his spikey interest but they are new. Do you think it makes sense to mention those in the 10 spots if it means excluding a very long term but unrelated to the spikey activity?
Example (which is made up but the same idea would apply): Kid is a rising senior and has been on the teen board of a library for 6 years and has done significant work related to this (planned programs, weekly meetings, interviewed guest speakers, etc). OR Kid is a rising senior has an internship in a law firm where kid shadows, learns how to research, reviews documents, prepares exhibits, etc. (Started summer 2025) Kid's other work and activities relate to law. |
I like the library EC more. |
I have trouble imagining a situation in which a kid has 9 other activities, all law related that are more impressive than either of these, and none of which can be combined.
One of my kids is, like this kid, jumpy, doing lots of little activities. We plan to combine things. Is that really not an option here? |
9 slots are filled inc combining many activities. Kid is not jumpy, just that this internship is brand new. Not all activities are law related, but should be included. |
If your kid had to combine many activities to get them down to 9 and then has 2 more, they are jumping from activity to activity. Which is fine. I'm not saying that jumping from activity to activity is bad, for my kid, it has helped them figure out what they wanted to do, and has given them varied experiences related to that plan. |
Kid is not jumping around + Kid needs to combine activities and even drop some off. Your kid's experience isn't the same for everyone. |
You’re trying to tell a story. Pick ones that help narrative regardless if recent. Ten is a lot of slots |
Can one of the essays be about the library work and then tie it into how the kid has learned the value of community education and information that is why he is interested in going into law? |
Mine had an internship for one month summer before senior year. It was #6 on list.
Somewhat indirectly related to major. Admitted to 4 T20. |
And? |
I would list the newer activity somewhere but make sure you describe it in a way that does not sound like I am trying to impress AOs if applying to HYPSM. I believe AOs know kids interests change — and they will want to know what the kid did this summer. |
What do you mean "and?" It directly relates to the original question. |
MITonly wants four. If you're doing more than that, those activities prob aren't that meaningful |
Where have you seen that? |
DP. MIT’s own application only has four activities spots. |
