Last-minute trip to Outer Banks

Anonymous
I want to take my daughter there, but I’ve never been and have no idea if there are hotels right on the beach. Can anyone tell me if there would be availability last minute or is it all houses that have to rent months in advance? We can only stay a few days so we want to be right on the water. Thank you for your help.

Yes, there are definitely hotel options. We have stayed at and liked Sea Ranch before. You'll find better luck in the bigger towns like Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, and Nags Head I think, but may be able to find something in Corolla. Duck will be tough.

The Hilton Garden Inn in Kitty Hawk is right on the beach, but avoid it if you can. Ridiculously overpriced and horribly run. We stayed there a few years ago and part of the ceiling fell down on us as we were sleeping.

Sanderling is nice but pricy

There's a holiday inn in corolla that's nice

We love Hatteras Island. It’s quieter than Nags Head and Kitty Hawk, but has great beaches and enough to do for a couple days.

We haven’t stayed at the above hotel, but driven by it plenty of times.

Sometimes you can rent a place for a few days, if a place is randomly open. Try some of the rental agencies (village realty) in addition to the hotels.

There’s a Hampton Inn between Duck and Corolla, though I’ve never stayed. The location is good.

OP, what’s your vibe? Duck/Corolla is more for people who want a quiet beach vacation and don’t need much entertainment outside of restaurants and a few shops. Nags Head has more crowded beaches, but it’s also more centrally located for things like gokarts and mini golf and Roanoke.

Not sure you can room right now..

Also, if no rooms are available this last minute, you can try Wrightsville Beach. It's a bit farther south and has more hotels.
