I have to bring my car in tomorrow - relatively new car, and a piece just literally came loose and fell off from the interior. I think it’s obvious it should be covered by warranty because the only way it really could come loose is if it wasn’t properly installed but I’m also expecting them to say it was because of rough use and “offer” to fix it for some absurd price… it’s not a terribly difficult part to install, so if they present me with the estimate with parts and labor, can I just say, no thanks I’ll take the parts tho…? And then snap it in myself in the parking lot? |
Generally the service department and the parts department are separate. So the service department probably won't sell you the part, but the parts department will. Just ask the service department for the part number so you know what to ask the parts department for.

Thanks. I can certainly find it online as well, I just thought it would be easiest to get it while I’m there. |
Is it still under bumper-to-bumper warranty? As Jeff said, parts department is separate from service department and you should be able to get it if you know the number or look up yourself. |
It is under bumper to bumper 3k Toyota and sun visor dropped out. |
I don’t think you have anything to worry about. You are not asking them to fix a blown engine. No one is going to hassle you for a sun visor that takes 1 minute to install |
The dealer will sell parts at MSRP in their brick and mortar. If you find reputable dealer online who wholesales parts, you can save a lot. Just verify it’s a true factory part, which isn’t hard. |
Yeah initial response when I dropped it off was that warranty will cover it. I just have had terrible experiences with dealer service departments and found there’s nothing they can’t make you wait 5-7hrs for and charge you $250 in labor. |
Get the quote in writing and schedule an appointment (1st thing in the morning, if possible, before they get backed up) to pull your anxiety about waiting around abd getting over charged. |
You have nothing to worry about OP. You may have to wait three hours though. |
If you want to overpay, yes. I’d call a parts dealer instead, or a junkyard. |
We buy parts all the time. Depends if you want OEM parts or not. Ebay is also an option. Lots of OEM and also off brand sellers there. |
For a nonessential part such as a sunvisor, sure, why not. For a critical part such as a timing belt I would never use eBay or Amazon, too many reports of counterfeit OEM parts leading to major failures. Rock auto is considered a reliable site for parts or online dealer part stores. |
Ford has a website where you can order parts. I'm sure other brands do too. |
Do this. Dealership mechanics will charge you ridiculous markups. Always been that way. DIY if it's so easy. |
