Since we can’t trust Trump and he’s obsessed with breaking a record on deportations, I think he will do anything to make it, however shameful his goal is.
DACA citizens are legal citizens who can live and work in the US. There are about 500,000 of them and they need to renew their status every two years and pay a fee. They are vetted to ensure they have no criminal record, they graduated high school and they are either working or in a school program. They are easy pickings because the government has all of their information including where they live, work, children and spouses. I have family members in the DACA program and as a result I’ve met many of their family members and friends. They are good people who were brought here as children and don’t know any other country. Is the government talking about ending their status and sending them to the Alligator place? Has anyone read anything about some politician proposing changes? |
If they were legal citizens they wouldn’t be in this pickle. The sins of the parents are being visited upon them. |
They are not legal.
DACA was started by Obama with no congressional approval. It can be ended by Trump. |
I asked AI about their current status: As of July 9, 2025, DACA recipients who received initial status before July 16, 2021, retain temporary protection from deportation and can renew their DACA status and work authorization every two years. However, a January 17, 2025, Fifth Circuit Court ruling declared the 2022 DACA regulation unlawful, blocking new initial DACA applications. Current recipients remain protected unless their status expires or is individually terminated, but the program's future is uncertain due to ongoing litigation, with a potential Supreme Court review looming.[](https://immigrantjustice.org/for-immigrants/know-your-rights/deferred-action-childhood-arrivals-daca-frequently-asked-questions/)[](https://www.uscis.gov/newsroom/alerts/important-update-on-deferred-action-for-childhood-arrivals) |
That’s a great answer! They are legal. Trump tried to end it last time he was in office. He tweeted “Many of the people in DACA, no longer very young, are far from ‘angels.’ Some are very tough, hardened criminals.” From 2012 Through fiscal 2017, there were a total of 798,980 DACA application approvals. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services data indicate that 2,030 who have gained approval have had that status revoked due to criminal activity. The percentage is less than 0.5%. If American citizens could keep their criminal rate down to 0.5% of the population what a country this would be! |
The money this country spends on frivolous lawsuits and pettiness could feed the world. There are no problems with the DACA population. They are working, paying taxes and 99.5% of them are staying out of trouble. In the meantime rich people like Brett Favre and the former Mississippi governor stole $77 million (diverted funds to themselves and to build a volleyball! Stadium and money for celebrity speeches?) from a program to help poverty in the state. No charges filed. The federal government is politely asking for the money back. Let’s work on real crime like corrupt politicians and leave people alone who are working and minding their business. |
DACA is an illegal program. Would you say it is OK for Trump to just declare the income tax rates he wants and announce that he won't prosecute people if they pay his lower tax rate? |
Now that you ask, I wouldn’t put it past him. And call me pessimistic, but I have yet to see any GOP or course correction when . Did you read the tariff letters that went out to our diplomatic friends? Did you think that was respectful or hoe an executive leader should conduct global business? |
Huh, and THAT was considered to apply to all circuits? btw I remember the Mississippi thing, wasn't it TANF funds they diverted? |
Small quibble, they are not citizens. But yeah, this is also like the people who now have to either comply with requirements for immigration related appointments to keep their status legal but could end up getting snatched when they do, or getting snatched because they didn't and are out of compliance. Plus the IRS is giving DHS all their data. I believe some of them are children of immigrants who BECAME citizens and didn't realize their kids also needed to be naturalized. |
funny how when Trump does stuff without Congressional approval Pam and Karoline get all indignant about any suggestion it's not on the up and up, but anything Biden or Obama EVER did was illegal, period. |
Trump’s executive orders are mostly illegal. Republicans can’t admit it is a successful program because Obama created it. Same with the Affordable Care Act. A huge success by the Obama administration and the republicans have done nothing but try to destroy it for ten years. And Trump campaigned on creating an insurance plan that was superior to the Affordable Care Act and cheaper. It was never done. Not even close. Let’s stop the partisan pettiness trying to cut down programs that work just because “the other side” did it. |
You do realize that Trump is doing a lot of stuff without Congressional approval, including evoking a "state of emergency" for his abuse of tariffs. |
It’s a little more complicated than that, but I agree there’s a genuine question as to the legality of the program. |
Congress authorized the President to evoke a state of emergency. |
