Do most non Hispanic people assume we don't speak English?

Wondering as a moderate Hispanic born in DC with family who has been here since 1965. I encounter way too many people who assume we don't speak English even when my English is clearer than theirs. I got annoyed at one and she said , well you never know nowadays.

I would expect it to be rude to have an expectation either way - that you do speak fluent English or that you don't. As you say, plenty of people have English less clear than yours, so why should I expect based on skin color that someone is or isn't fluent?

What is a "moderate" Hispanic? I assume anyone in the US speaks at least rudimentary English.

I grew up in Texas. Very many Hispanic people speak English, many natively. Very many Hispanic people also speak very little or no English. I make no assumptions.

People should NOT speak Spanglish to someone based on "how they look".

This happens in Silver Spring/Takoma Park all the time, give it a rest I get it you learned Spanish.

Yes. At that point, they will tell me if they don't understand.

I don't think they assume that, I think they prefer to speak Spanish if they think you know Spanish.

I didn't say anything about fluent but at least knowing some of the English language. Obviously, if most people think based on how you look that you don't know English then the perception is that they think Hispanics are non-english speaking refuse to learn the language and are not legal in this country which is a poor perception all around of anyone who looks Hispanic.

To answer the question, I'm non-Hispanic and I speak to people in America in English. Sometimes they don't know English, but I always default to English.

If you live in the DC area which is very politically sensitive then you would know what moderate means. But I think you don't live here if you're questioning why it would matter.

If you live in the DC area which is very politically sensitive then you would know what moderate means. But I think you don't live here if you're questioning why it would matter.

You can think whatever you want about me. I live in Silver Spring. If I know someone well enough to know their politics, I know whether they speak English.
