Which airport would you use -Munich or Vienna? We will be arranging a flight to another EU city. Flight times and costs are comparable out of either airport. Which would be easier (using trains) to get to from Salzburg? TIA |
I went to Salzburg 10 years ago, so this may have changed, but it was much easier getting from Munich airport to Salzburg vs Vienna. A shorter train ride and fewer transfers. |
Munich is a great airport all
Around |
Rent a car and drive to Munich airport. It's a super easy drive and easy airport to navigate. |
Munich is closer and will likely have more (and cheaper) flight options. Look at both German (DB) and Austrian (OBB) train schedules. |
There's now a direct train from Vienna's airport to Salzburg, but even with a transfer, the trip from Munich airport to Salzburg is slightly quicker (about 2.5 hours or less from Munich vs nearly 3 hours -- or more, if you're not on the express Railjet -- from Vienna). |
Attended an event at Salzburg a few years ago. Flew into Vienna, and out of Munich. Both were easy but Munich has a better airport and it's a slightly shorter train ride as well. |
Just checking where you are flying. Salzburg Airport doesn't have a ton of flight options outside of winter (a lot of skiing oriented flights there), but there are flights to a good number of airports in Europe.

OP here. Vienna Airport looks cheaper for my destination, and now that there is a non-stop train, I may do that. Thanks! |
Munich is super easy. From the airport you take the train to the central station (Munich HBF) or Munich East (Ostbahnhof) and then take the regional train to Salzburg.
You can use the Bayern ticket from DB for this trip (and same on the return), which is very cheap. But there are some restrictions, so double check that it will work for you. https://int.bahn.de/en/offers/regional/regional-day-ticket-bavaria |
We just took the Salzburg to the Vienna airport train this week. So nice to not have to change trains. |
Munich and rent a car, some gorgeous towns in Bavaria on the way. |
I take the train in Europe. Try Eurostar. |
Both are good airports, VIE smaller than MUC but MUC arguably more pleasant (changing quickly as it gets busier and busier). Enjoy Salzburg! |
