Do you just replace your car battery every 2-5 years or wait until until it fails?

Just wondering if you preemptively replace your car battery every few years or wait until you have trouble starting your car?

When it fails.

I wish I had changed it before. I had to get a jump twice. There was no reason to wait as it was the only upkeep I had.

Wait til car has trouble starting or doesnt start

When it fails- call road side assistance, they come with a new battery (in 25 years, has happened twice with 2 different cars)

My husband has a battery charger and charges our car batteries regularly to prolong their lifespan. So far it seems to work.

Does time mean nothing to you? Sitting waiting for the battery truck is awful. Especially if you were on your way somewhere.

Until it fails.

This is what I was told to do. Not sure it’s worth it though! Otherwise $300 every 4 years seems okay

Just had mine fail on me (again, this happens about every 5 years or so). It was pretty unnerving (I think I am also just older and more anxious) so I’ve put a note in my calendar to change it in 4 years.

that's what alternator does. not sure why your DH is wasting time doing that.

If it's been 3 years, I would strongly consider replacing it right before winter to be extra cautious. I would upgrade to an AGM battery as well for longer life.

You can also buy a load tester and check your battery periodically if you are into that.

Also everyone should carry a portable jump starter. Never have to jump start your car the old way ever again.

For those who really want to go the extra mile, they can plug their battery into a maintainer which can significantly extend your battery's lifespan, especially helpful for cars that are rarely driven. Most people would rather not.

There are cheap ones out there but here's a high end option:

Batteries are not built like they used to be. They don’t last as long either. Plus, they don’t always give you an idea when they’ll stop working. Once our battery gets over 3 years in age, I run to Costco grab a new one and install.

Buy a portable jump pack so you can jump start the car and not wait for the road side assistance if the battery fails.
