Best small(ish) middle schools in FCPS

Anonymous
If your kids loved their middle school, can you share which one and why? We are moving to the area this year.

TIA!

None of them are small. The difference between 900 and 1200 kids is minimal—if anything the larger ones will have more elective options and after school programs.

Find homes in your budget with a decent commute, and then ask about those schools.

+1. It's not as small as some of the others but the building is new and beautiful and the administration and academics were excellent. They have a new principal since our DC left but I haven't heard any complaints. Keep in mind that fewer students doesn't necessarily mean smaller classes or fewer issues.

Carson MS. My son absolutely loved it there - the teachers were amazing!

OP—it’s two years. Your kid will be fine at any middle school. The differences are negligible.

Focus on the things that will impact your kid a lot more: Your presence at home. If you buy a house that you can’t afford or are unhappy with, that will make you stressed out around your kid. Or if you buy a house that results in an awful commute which results in precious time away from your middle schooler, that’s problematic.

No they are not.

You want to avoid Herndon Middle School, Hughes MS, and anything in Annandale. Figure out what high school you would be going to also.

What PP is saying is to stay away from the poors.

Isn't Carson one of the biggest middle schools in the county?

Everyone I know that has kids at Hughes has great things to say about it. Reston has a really nice, tight community. We're just outside it and a small portion of our ES is zoned to Hughes/South Lakes and people buy in that neighborhood specifically for the pyramid. I'm not sure why PP would exclude Hughes other than they are racist.

As a teacher, this is untrue.

The school board wants it to be impossible to figure out what high school your kids would be going to because they are going to do never ending boundary reviews pursuant to its new policy.

Best to look outside of Fairfax like many others are now doing because of the boundary change crap. Many of us are sticking around solely because of 2% mortgages. Many of us regret our decision to move to the county.

I wonder where people are looking beyond FCPS - isn’t this the next school district in the state?
