My 9 year old DD has shoulder length thick wavy hair and by the end of every day it looks like she rolled down hills, went through a car wash and then blew it out upsides down--it's just a mess of knots with a halo of frizz. Any suggestions for a product that will keep her from looking like a wild animal by the end of the day? She doesn't care a ton about how she looks, but even she has commented "woah! What happened?" when she sees herself in the mirror. |
Thick hair for me is poofy and nasty if it's shoulder length. Consider the cut because a 9 year old isn't going to be great at using products.
There are some good sprays from Not Your Mother for curly hair. If it's knotty, she may want to brush it when wet in the shower and scrunch when she gets out. No towel drying for wavy hair. She should wear her hair in a loose scrunchie at night or a braid. The next day she can spray it with a refresher or water/conditioner and use a wide tooth comb on it. Check out CurlyHair on reddit for more advice, even for wavy hair. |
Dont try to brush it.
Ask a stylist for a low maintenence cut. Use conditioner for curly hair, never just shampoo and never the cheap all in 1 stuff. She probably doesn't need to wash it more than a few times a week. Air or towel dry with product, don't blow dry and dont let it dry without applying product. I think the curl products from dry bar and john frieda. You may have to try a few to get the right ones. |
I’d let it get a little longer and use the Not Your Mother’s Curl products. We get them from Target and they aren’t expensive. Brush wet and then scrunch with a towel after bathing. Let air dry or use a diffuser. Don’t brush the dry hair. |
Sauve odd curly hair products - shampoo, conditioner, detangler. It smells good and has been great for all three of my daughters. |
Daily refresh with a mist bottle and a leave in product or styler.
Finding the right products is a key step. My kids are biracial and curly but we swear by Mielle products. I would try Aussie and make sure it’s well moisturized and detangled. Protective style at night - braid, bun, ponytail |

As someone with wavy frizzy hair-braids. Nothing will hold all day. Whoever helps her get ready in the morning needs to get good at two French braids. |
Longer hair helps - thick hair at shoulder length can be difficult. My 11 yo likes mousse. I bought a cheap suave one and it’s been fine. Use a good conditioner, leave some in, then finger comb in the mousse and let it air dry. Don’t brush it after adding the mousse.
I prefer gel for mine, similar process but had a bit more hold. If kids are playing (as they should be!) they’re going to look a bit wind blown by the end of the day. Consider wearing a ponytail later in the day. |
As someone with curly hair, definitely don't cut it shorter, it all ends up ballooning around your head. My mom made that mistake when I was about that age. The Not Your Mother's stuff does work okay.
I do also think at 9, it's okay if her hair is a bit wild. It suggests she's had a good day of running around and I think you should let her preserve that feeling before the teen years come and she gets more self conscious. |
Braid it! |
