Anything that you thought was amazing? Can be anything from a town to a museum to food or random thing you liked. I have been many times but not in the past 20 years. Bonus points if appealing to a teen dd. |
Where exactly are you going? When? Or are you in the planning phase? |
Where in the South of France are you based? Are you in/around Nice? How long are you there? |
Just a few days from another area of France. This is just a little side trip and we’ll have a car. |
Two weeks from now. I booked a hotel in Cannes so far but that’s it. |
Visit Eze and Villefranche sur Mer. Staying in Nice might be better. There is a little more to do. You can take a train from Cannes to neighboring towns all the way to Monaco. |
I'm French and would only visit outside of the summer, because I can't stand the heat and crowds.
What fascinates me about the South are the Roman constructions: the Pont du Gard aqueduct; the arenas of Nimes or Arles; the theater of Orange, where they still hold performances. These are all in unbelievably good condition. I also like to visit fortifications and castles. The largest European fortified city of the Middle Ages is Carcassonne, which has been a thriving population center from Roman times to today. It has double-walled fortifications that you can visit, as well as the castle itself. I also love perfume. Grasse is the town that manufactures some of the most expensive essences of plants to use as scent bases (that are then mixed and matched to produce perfume). There is a school of "noses" there, where they train people in scents, and a museum. But if you want sun and sea, you can take a dip in the Calanques between Marseilles and Cassis - a coast made up of little coves with white cliffs and typical Mediterranean shrubs and trees. The waters are very clear and it's quite beautiful. They are in a national park, with certain restrictions around bathing, so read all the signs before jumping off a cliff. |
We did lunch at the chevre d’or and it was a
memorable fun experience |
These are great recommendations. How would these places be in May?
We will be in France and Germany next year in mid May, but we are still trying to decide where to go. Ideally, we would be back home or in Ireland or Denmark by mid/end of June.

Ugh. I was groped in Villefranche sur Mer. I thought Villefranche sur Mer was amazing until it happened. It happened 3 or 4 more times after in the South of France. At that point, I was ready to leave France. |
That's... unbelievable. Once, sadly, it can happen to anyone. I happened to me in the Paris metro. Multiple times? I lived in France for years as a young woman and this never happened to anyone in my circle of peers and relatives. |
We loved Uzès and canoeing on the Gorge d'Ardeche, ending under the Pont du Gard. |
Pp here. I also lived in Paris for years and never had problems. I’ve never had this happen in Champagne, Bordeaux and other parts of France. I’m not sure what happened in the South of France, but I’m never going back. |
