Gap year financial aid and merit scholarships

My kid would like to take a gap year. Does anyone have thoughts on whether it makes more sense to apply as a HS senior, and then defer, or to wait and apply during the gap year?
Also, if a kid gets a significant merit scholarship, will they usually hold it for you if you take a gap year? |
