We have friends staying in hotels in DC and am planning on meeting them there on the 4th. We are coming in from McLean. We know all of the reasons we shouldn’t and haven’t done this is 25 years because of the crowds but want to see our friends. Yes, we considered also getting a room but they picked a hotel way out of our price range.
We know the surge pricing will be out of control that day. Will we even be able to get a ride with Uber or Lyft? Has anyone been successful going very early in the day and waiting out the crowds to come home? |
| Why wouldn't you just take metro? |
| That’s also an option as a last resort. We have not taken the metro in 15 years or so. |
Because it sucks on a good day. Let alone the 4th of July |
Wrong. You live in McLean, which tells me you probably take metro twice a year for things like July 4 and it bothers you to have to be shoulder to shoulder with the have-nots. Metro is fine. But nobody should go downtown for the fireworks so who cares. |
| If you really don't want to take metro right after the end of the fireworks, go back to their hotel with them, get a drink in the lobby or a nearby restaurant, or hang out in their room. After an hour or so, the crowds and the traffic will begin to clear out. Then you can either take the metro, which will be much less crowded, or get a Uber/taxi. The roads will still be slow but shouldn't be gridlocked. |
I’m 50 years old. I have not taken the metro since my 20s or early 30s, I don’t remember. Believe it or not, some of us don’t take the metro. I didn’t want this to be a metro debate and am not opposed to any suggestions. Thanks to all that are giving real advice. Right now it sounds like we should hang out at their hotel, try to get an Uber later and then take the metro if we can’t. |
Correct. I make too much money to slum it on the Metro. |
So since you haven’t taken the metro in 30 years, exactly how do you assert that “it sucks on a good day”? Completely useless. |
What a loser. |
| Are you planning on drinking? You can probably pay to park at their hotel for cheaper than 2 ubers. Check the day park rates. Crowds will be bad for 60-90 minutes after the fireworks. So I would not plan to uber or metro during that time. Don't forget to check road closures. |
| Do you want to consider parking at their hotel? getting to the city on the 4th is easy, its only getting out that is painful since everyone leaves at once. Uber will suck. waiting and metro-ing across the river is the easiest solution |
| Just metro! Let this be the first time in 20 years that you try the metro. What makes you so special compared to the rest of us that you are too good for the metro? Most of us on DCUM probably make as much money as you or perhaps more. |
| I would never take the metro, it’s full of idiots. |
| Take the metro at least to get to a further out spot. You will need to walk a lot after it finished before you can get one. Maybe could get dropped off there. |
