Hello. My vegetable plants (tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, squash) seem to struggle in this heat year after year and often burn. I'm thinking of getting some shade cloth and basically building a canopy over my garden beds. Has anyone ever done this? Any thoughts as to whether this will help? Thanks |
My husband is also having problems with his veggy garden, but he thinks it's soil quality and is trying to improve that for this summer. Perhaps you can shade half your bed and compare at the end of the summer?

Are your plants getting adequate water? |
It's not the heat but the sun exposure. They can get too much if in full sun for too many hours a day. So yes, some netting to give a reduction in sun exposure helps. Not a full on opaque cover though. |
To answer the Q above, yes, I believe that they are getting enough water. We water them regularly. Yes, I believe they get too much sun exposure. That's why I'm thinking about a shade cloth. Any recommendations? Thanks |
Just some cheap netting. Most are nylon and will deteriorate in the sun so won't last too many seasons. |
