Maine and Montreal in a week?

Anonymous
Is this realistic? Looking for a place to go at end of July for a week. I would love to see Acadia then Canada? Any ideas of places to stay around Acadia or Montreal? 3 kids-15, 12 and 10 years old. We have never been but we are active and can hike and bike!

You have seven days to spend up north? So nine days that you can be away?

Basically more than a day's driving to Montreal. Quebec City would be closer - although you'll go through Maine's rural byways; which might make it more scenic.
While Montreal is more globally cosmopolitan, Quebec City has more of a European flavor.

Yes

It's doable, though may feel like a whirlwind. Many people who like hiking and biking would probably prefer 7 days in Acadia. There are almost 40 miles of carriage roads and many hikes.

We’ve done similar trip but with Quebec and Acadia. Looking at what you enjoy doing, I’d a lot as much time to Acadia as you can.

If you’re talking about this July, your lodging options might be tight in Acadia. Many people visit and plan much further out. Try to stay on MDI close to Bar Harbor. Southwest Harbor is nice too.

Why Montreal and Maine? Why not Nova Scotia if you want to add Canada?

Great idea-thanks! we can do this but bulk of trip will be in Acadia area.

Any recommendations of things to do in Acadia area with kids this age-15, 12 and 10 who have never been there but like to hike and how long for Nova Scotia?

Have you searched this forum for Acadia activities? There are many threads every year.

Unless you just want to go to Canada because it’s fun to use passports, skip NS. By far the best part is cape Breton, which takes a long time to get to and enjoy. Three days is not nearly enough.

Isn’t it 6 hours from Acadia to Old Quebec? I’d do that. It’s a lovely area. Then head to Montreal on your way home.

Nova Scotia will be similar to Acadia. Don’t you want a change of pace?

Quebec City is much much nicer imo. Montreal is just a big city.

Sure, but it’s also very likely on their way home, so why not stop?

The old part of montreal is nice and has a fun vibe on the waterfront. The Embassy Suites is very walkable and good for families.

Do we know if op is driving or flying?

Is this for this summer? I think you'll have trouble finding lodging in/around Acadia at this point. I think you'd find plenty to do in Acadia only for 7 days, though, if you can sort out lodging. We did that a couple years ago and loved it. Southwest acadia has some nice flat hikes and is less crowded. Drive up Cadillac mountain for sunset. Sea kayaking. Spend an afternoon/evening in Bar Harbour (get Mount Desert ice cream). Jordan Pond has a really fun hike around it and get popovers at the restaurant there. We really loved that vacation! Kids were 12 and 9 when we went and it was perfect.

Practically speaking, you need a car if you are spending a week in Acadia, right?

I’m guessing op has a weeklong rental in Acadia and is contemplating tacking on Canada.
