Head lice

Anonymous
Just found out there was a case of head lice in my DC’s class. What do people usually do? Examine themselves/keep an eye out? Hire someone to come inspect for them? I’ve heard of people doing the latter but don’t know if that’s overkill. If you do that, who do you use?

Get a metal terminator comb and some Ivermectin treatment to have on hand. Check every few days for nits for a bit.

Is lice just really bad in DC right now? Is it always like this? We moved here recently and our kid starts school in the fall, at an elementary with a good reputation. Just heard from several families there that live was a huge problem there last year, and seeing all these live threads on here. My kid (8) has never had lice and if there was an outbreak at either of her previous schools, I never heard about it.

Is there always a lot of lice here? I'm now considering cutting my kid's hair short because really don't want to deal with it if I can. I never had lice as a kid through a couple outbreaks at my elementary and I want to keep the streak alive.

Get a lice comb and check periodically. Lice are less “contagious” than many people think though

I have no idea if it’s just a coincidence but my daughter has also had lice several times since we moved here and never had it anywhere else. But that it is a “good” school or in a “good” neighborhood has literally nothing to do with it. Lice don’t discriminate. I do the weekly check with the good metal lice comb if I hear it is going around in her school or camp. If I find something I’m not sure of (or worse, that I am sure of), I pay for the Lice Lady to come comb through all of us for my own mental health.

Change schools. There are way too many threads here about lice, and probably it's at that school district that doesn't care about lice in students and allows pandemics to start.

Easy to tell you have no medical background.

Go to the Health subforum on here and read all the threads about lice. It's crazy. I only ever knew one person in my life that ever had lice, a kid growing up, and only had it for one day until he shaved his head, then came back to school.

They sent out notices to all the parents and had a PTA meeting the day it was discovered, but it was nipped in the bud so to speak with just that one case.

Something is definitely wrong if so many people are getting it and acting like it's common or normal.

So we just had a bout of stubborn lice in our household. The pediatrician told us that he would prescribe ivermectin as an alternative to home remedies, but to FIRST try a lice clinic. Ivermectin DOES work for lice, but he warned that it is more powerful than an antibiotic and should only be used as a last resource.
The lice clinic was very effective. Lice Clinic of America will check and nit comb your hair for around $30. Can't remember the exact amount.

OP. We just checked DC’s hair a few times (it’s thin and relatively light colored) and don’t see anything so assume (hope?) we’re in the clear. Still not clear if we should be doing more than that. As far as I know, it was only one case at school.

I think actually the lice became more resistant to the first line treatment they used to use
