Trump offers new foreign-made phone for sale, citing "American values"
https://www.engadget.com/mobile/smartphones/trump-mobile-drops-its-made-in-the-usa-claims-193917169.html Concepts of the USA, I guess. |
Is there even a US-made phone at this point? Because I’m not aware of one. Which sort makes your entire thread kind of deceptive.
But the deception is the point, isn’t it? |
The US doesn't have the ability to make anything like a modern cellular telephone. Some of the parts (processors, DRAM) could potentially be made here (and are, in some cases), but we don't have the ability to manufacture anything like this from start to finish. Even if we could make them here, the labor costs would be prohibitive. |
PP here: there _is_ one USA-made cell phone (Purism Librem 5), but even that isn't 100% made in the US, it costs almost $2k, and runs neither Android nor IOS. It isn't competitive in any way in price or specifications with the rest of the market. |
Didn’t Apple say it’s bringing jobs here? |
Assembling from foreign parts. You can't get around the problem that the existing tooling is all overseas. |
