There is a man who directs children to solicit money at on South Dakota Ave near Rte 50. They wear baseball jerseys, no idea if they actually get to play baseball at some point but he had them out there today at noon. It’s insanely hot. The air quality is terrible.
Are any laws being broken? I hate this man. I can’t believe he is allowed to exploit children like this. It’s so offensive, but can I even call it in? Surely if it’s illegal, 30 cops a day must drive past there? I hope he rots, I really do, and I could tell you what I think about the parents as well. |

Call the police non emergency number and ask. That sounds terrible and I don’t blame you for wanting to do something.

What’s wrong with a youth sports team raising money?
Why don’t YOU offer to pony up a few thousand bucks for uniforms and equipment and DC P&R field rental fees and all the other stuff coaches and team volunteers have to do for kids to play on a team? FFS, step up and DO something FOR them! |

Men using kids seems to be the new scam around here.
There's a guy in Leesburg who uses kids in the Wegmans shopping center. From what I have seen, he has the kids go up to people and their carts and start unloading the groceries for them. They don't ask, they just run up and start helping. Then they demand money or if the person shoos them away or refuses to pay, the guy comes in and gets loud about it. I reported him to Wegmans. A worker and a cart attendant forced them to leave, but they said their hands were tied because the trespass order must come from the shopping complex. I've also seen kids set up a table outside of the UPS store to collect donations for their team. I asked what team and the one little boy said "um, I think football today." So, yeah, definitely giving off scam vibes. I didn't see an adult with these kids that time, though. |
Because that's unlikely what is actually happening |
Even if you don’t mind what appears to be exploiting children, do you have any concerns about doing it during a Heat Advisory period in a location with particularly poor air quality? |
|
OP, this is a concern that can be reported to CPS. They may or may not investigate, but it’s a legitimate concern about the well-being of children — made even more concerning given the current weather alerts.
|
| MYOB is what needs to happen here OP. If you get involved and hell rains down on you in vengeance when this guys finds out who caused the trouble. then don't say you weren't warned. |
I would happily donate to them if that’s what I thought it was for, but no, I do not think the random change that people put in those buckets pays for baseball. I think it pays for the man sitting in the shade across the intersection watching them. |
And it encourages them. Any activity in a median (fundraising even legit, panhandling, selling flowers) is extremely dangerous and distracts drivers. Dr. Gridlock used to warn about this. |

Um Mr holier than thou
1. Dc parks are free to rent. Charges only apply if you trash the field etc. and they are part of an organized league then it’s not something the coach has to book 2. The Nats and DC’s farm team take care of local kids playing ball. The farm team’s field is in ward 8 across the river. It’s nice btw and a great way to watch and enjoy a game. 3. If raising money was a thing for local dc youth teams we would hear about it on here that larlo’s daddy is super rich so other moderate rich parents can’t contribute These kids are being abused. Parents might not know. They might think they are watching tv w grandma and uncle so and so took them out. |
This is making the whole operation look even better. |
Excuse me? What kind of threat is that? You're out of your mind. OP needs to call police and CPS, of course. There is no way the organizer finds out who he or she is. You're a horrible person. Go away. |
This is a very creepy response to someone who is concerned about children being treated badly and possibly abused. Wow. |
